In February 2012 Indonesian aviation conglomerate Lion Air Group placed order for 201 airplanes of new modification.

Thus Boeing started to engineer elongated version of MAX line that had to replace Boeing 737-900 and Boeing 737-900ER of previous Next Generation.

On March 7th 2017 in front of manufacturing shelter in Renton, Washington state was demonstrated first assembled prototype of Boeing 737 Max 9.

On April 13th 2017 Boeing 737 MAX 9 took off the ground for the first time. The airplane took off from the Renton Municipal airdrome and in 2 hours and 42 minutes landed on the Boeing Field.
