Airbus and Rolls-Royce will make flight tests of passenger airplanes with the use of 100% sustainable aviation fuel. Part 3

“After COVID-19 pandemic people will desire to travel again, however they will start to think more about influence of their travels on the environment. Gas-turbine engines will continue to be used for the flights on long distances for many decades. Sustainable aviation fuel will become integrate part of industry decarbonizing and we actively work on making it accessible for aviation industry. This research is very important for understanding peculiarities of 100% sustainable aviation fuel and its introduction for reducing emissions level”, – Simon Burr, Director of Engineering and Technology, Civil Aviation, Rolls-Royce marked.

Jonathan Wood, Neste vice-president in Europe (renewable decision for aviation; Renewable Aviation) marked: “The data received will provide opportunity to use sustainable fuel in bigger concentrations than 50% mixtures. Independent analysis showed that with use of 100% sustainable fuel Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by 80% during entire life cycle compared with the fuel made of hydrocarbon feed. Thanks to this research we will determine additional advantages from using sustainable aviation fuel”.

For the first time opportunities for using 100% sustainable aviation fuel on a big commercial airplane demonstrated American Boeing in the ecoDemonstrator program in 2018, though that time was used cargo airplane B-777 of FedEx airline company.

Boeing promises to certificate all its’ commercial programs for operation with use of 100% fuel made of renewable bio-sources to 2030. This step is part of global strategy for fulfilling assumed obligations regarding significant reduction of ecological trace of civil aviation to 2050.
